Draw a technical or research figure

Describe a figure by what it is, a tree from its structure or boxes and what connects them, and get back vector source you can typeset and edit, checked against named, versioned rules before you see it. Coordinates are worked out for you.

For researchers, engineers and technical writers.

01 What you send

A request in plain words.

Source in the format you picked and the version of the rules it passed. Forma can draw an answer it returned, free.

intent

The figure you want, in plain language: its parts and how they connect.

format

The format to return.

02 Real answers

As returned, with the request that produced each.

Data pipeline diagram in TikZ

“A data pipeline as boxes joined by arrows, left to right: Ingest, Clean, Extract features, Train, Evaluate. Under Train, a box Model registry with an arrow from Train down to it.”

A Merkle tree: Root = H(ABCD) over H(AB) and H(CD), over H(A) to H(D), over data blocks A to D
vector-graphics · tikz

“A Merkle tree over four data blocks. Leaves: H(A), H(B), H(C), H(D) as boxes. Their parents: H(AB) above H(A) and H(B), H(CD) above H(C) and H(D). Root at the top: Root = H(ABCD). Draw it as a tree of boxes with edges from each parent to its children, and the four data blocks A, B, C, D as small boxes under their leaf hashes.”

A binary search tree with root 8 built from the keys 8, 3, 10, 1, 6, 14, 4, 7, 13
vector-graphics · tikz

“A binary search tree built by inserting the keys 8, 3, 10, 1, 6, 14, 4, 7, 13 in that order. Draw each node as a circle labelled with its key, edges from parent to child, left children to the left and right children to the right.”

03 Limits

What a verdict does not tell you.

  • The check covers the properties the figure states, in the figure you receive. It covers form, not intent: read the source before you publish it.

04 Questions

Before you start.

One credit, $0.01, per answer. A valid and an invalid verdict each cost a credit; a failure on our side never does. Pricing

Do I need LaTeX installed?

To typeset the source in your own document, yes, as for any TikZ, MetaPost or PiCTeX. To see it, no: Forma can draw an answer it returned, and the free online editors draw source you paste, with nothing to install.

Can I edit the result?

Yes. It is plain source in the format you picked: open it in the editor for that format, or in your own document.

Which format should I pick?

TikZ and MetaPost draw the same figures. PiCTeX refuses arbitrary stroke colours, fills and coloured text rather than approximate them.
